Where there's a Will...

William Abbots

...There's a way. Will Abbots was hailed as a hero for springing into action and helping two officers save a drowning suspect by rowing .

Officers had raided a house neighbouring Will's in Mere, they arrested one man but a second man leapt from a balcony into a lake, fracturing a leg in the process and attempting to swim off.

As Will stepped off his school bus he heard shouts from the lake where he spotted the man's head bobbing up and down in the water. Quick thinking Will shouted accross to the officers that he had a boat, and launched his dinghy.

Will rowed PC Mike Dawber and PCSO Andy Dolan out to the struggling suspect who was pulled from the water.

Constable Mike Dawber said, “Will’s action was brilliant. Not only did he provide the boat. But his expert rowing got us across the water very quickly. The man was well out into the lake but he was seriously injured and was obviously beginning to get into trouble. It was important that we reached him as soon as possible.”
